Super Mario Bros. 2 - released in 1988
Known in Japan as a completely different game, Nintendo of America changed Doki Doki Panic into a Mario game, marking it Mario’s second adventure in America. Though many hail Super Mario Bros. 3 as the best Mario game in this era, Super Mario Bros. 2 will still be my favorite. For one, you have the option of playing as four different characters, each with their own special ability. Mario is well-rounded, gifted in running and jumping, Luigi can jump the highest, Toad is the fastest, but cannot jump very high. And of course, Peach can float. Secondly, it marked the first appearance for many Mario enemies, like Shy Guys, Snifits, as well as Birdo. The game offers moderate difficulty, but some claim it doesn’t feel like a Mario game. What do you think?

Super Mario Bros. 3 - released in 1990
Hailed as one of the best Mario games of all time, and for good reason, too. Mario’s third adventure pitted him in many worlds, and featured a clever item system that aided the plumber along the way. Frog suits and raccoon suits were just the beginning of Mario’s fashion collection, and each item in the game served a valuable purpose. A warp whistle allowed Mario to skip levels, the music box put hammer bros. to sleep and a giant boot allowed Mario to bounce through levels with ease. Sure, the story isn’t much different, Bowser has kidnapped Princess Peach again, but seriously, does that ever get old? Truthfully, it’s the game play that matters, and Mario does not disappoint.

Super Smash Bros. - released in 1999
Probably one of the most successful franchises that has ever existed, Super Smash Bros. was, in a way, Nintendo’s version of the Marvel Vs. Capcom series in that it’s a clash of characters from different worlds (however the style of fighting is quite different.) Players were able to pit Mario against Link, or Donkey Kong against Pikachu. Super Smash Bros. came out of the left field, gamers were stoked (and for good reason!) Super Smash Bros. is also available on the Wii Virtual Console, and it was met with two sequels which improved on the formula, Super Smash Bros. Melee on the GameCube and Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii.

Super Mario Bros. - released in 1985
This title needs no introduction, Super Mario Bros. is probably the first video game most of us have ever owned. This was the first adventure that pitted Mario in an adventure to save Princess Toadstool from the clutches of Bowser, formerly known as King Koopa. Super Mario Bros. was also released again in 1988 with Duck Hunt, a mini-game that made use of the Nintendo Zapper light gun. Super Mario Bros. was and still is popular enough to have been released several times again on multiple platforms, and will soon be released on the Nintendo Wii under the Super Mario Bros. Collection, which may or may not be released in America.

Super Smash Bros. Melee - released in 2001
When this game was first announced, I remember feeling a tremendous amount of excitement, counting down each day until it’s release. Super Smash Bros. Melee took the original’s basic formula and improved on everything, adding more characters, more levels, more game modes and better graphics. It wasn’t surpassed until Super Smash Bros Brawl on the Nintendo Wii was released (though some may disagree with this statement.) Plus, I got to play as Princess Peach, and that’s always a good thing.
